American Heritage Voices sponsors the Powhatan heritage classes, which opened to all Virginia Indians in the fall of 2007. The major funding to open the school came from a grant by Native American Ministries for the Virginia Conference. The classes are directed and taught by Christine “Rippling Water” Custalow (Mattaponi). She teaches Powhatan regalia making, beadwork and pottery. Materials, such as leather for regalia making, are provided to the students free of charge through donations to American Heritage Voices.
The Powhatan heritage classes are making a tremendous impact in the lives of Native youth. The classes are building pride in Powhatan heritage and self-esteem. Many who have never participated in Native events, such as the annual Tribute and powwows, are able to do so now, because they have regalia to wear.
Originally it was thought that ten students would enroll in the classes. Now, the school has over thirty-six students. More want to attend, but funding has been limited. These ongoing Powhatan heritage classes need your support to continue.
